When to Plant Gladiolus in South Africa

A Seasonal Guide for Stunning Blooms

We’ve been growing Glads for the past four years and have completely fallen in love with these stunning cut flowers. Based in the heart of South Africa with harsh winters and hot summers, we’ve still had incredible success growing gladiolus, and so can you.

If you’re dreaming of tall, vibrant spikes lighting up your garden, timing is key. Let’s dig into the best time to plant gladiolus in South Africa, plus tips for growing a dazzling display this summer.

Best Time to Plant Gladiolus in South Africa

Planting Window: Early October – Late November

The ideal planting time depends on your region:

  • Warm Climates (KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga): Start as early as the beginning of October.

  • Cooler Climates (Gauteng, Free State, Northern Cape and parts of the Western Cape): Wait for frost to pass and start planting mid October to early November.

Stagger your plantings every 2 weeks through October and November for continuous blooms into summer!

Why Timing Matters

Gladiolus thrive in warm, well-drained soil and at least 7 hours of sunlight per day. Planting too early into cool soil may cause rot.

Late spring offers the perfect conditions, it is just warm enough for strong root growth and early enough for impressive summer spikes.
