Collection: Heirloom Chrysanthemums (Heirloom Mums)
For years I hunted high and low for proper heirloom chrysanthemums to grow in my South African garden. They were almost impossible to find for sale, so this little collection has been built up slowly over time – one cutting, one plant and one lucky find at a time.
Most of the varieties in my collection are unnamed, old treasures or new breeder’s seedlings. I don’t always know their official origins or fancy show names, but I do know this: they are a joy to grow. Big, characterful blooms, strong stems and colours that look like they belong in an old gardening book – from soft creams and blush tones to deep autumn shades.
My heirloom mums are still very much a passion project here at Love Dahlias in Douglas, South Africa. I am trialling them in our climate, learning how they behave as cut flowers and slowly building enough stock to share. As numbers allow, I plan to offer small, limited releases of heirloom chrysanthemum plants for South African gardeners who want something a little different for their late-season bouquets.
If you are looking for heirloom chrysanthemums in South Africa and haven’t been able to find them, you are in good company. This page is where I’ll share updates, photos and any future availability as this special collection grows.
