Bearded irises often listed as tall bearded iris or Iris Germanica are a classic spring-flowering perennial grown from a rhizome (not a bulb). They are loved for their bold, ruffled blooms, strong stems and the way they return year after year with very little fuss once established. If you want a flower that looks exotic but behaves like a tough garden plant, bearded irises are it.
These irises thrive in full sun and well-draining soil. The most important success tip is drainage: avoid waterlogged areas and plant where the soil dries out between waterings. In the right spot, bearded irises are long-lived, can handle dry spells once established, and make a beautiful statement in borders, cottage gardens, and cutting gardens.
How to grow bearded iris
-
Sun: Full sun for best flowering
-
Soil: Well-drained soil (raised beds work well in heavier soils)
-
Planting depth: Keep the rhizome close to the surface (don’t bury deeply)
-
Watering: Water in to settle, then avoid constantly wet soil
-
Care: Remove old leaves as needed; divide clumps every few years for best blooms
