Ranunculus FAQ
When should I plant ranunculus in South Africa?
In South Africa, ranunculus are planted in the cooler months. Aim for autumn to early winter – roughly March/April to early June – depending on how cold your area gets. This gives them enough cool growing time before they flower in late winter and spring.
Do I need to soak the corms before planting?
Yes. Ranunculus corms look like little dried “octopus legs” when you receive them. Soak them in room-temperature water for about 2–3 hours before planting so they can plump up and wake up properly. Do not leave them in water overnight – they may rot.
How deep and how far apart must I plant ranunculus?
Plant your corms about 4–6 cm deep, with the little claws pointing down. Space them roughly 10–15 cm apart in well-drained soil. Ranunculus love full sun and do not like sitting in soggy ground.
Will my ranunculus survive frost?
Light frost is usually fine, but hard frost can damage young growth. In very cold areas, plant slightly later in the season and protect the plants with frost cloth or a light cover on icy nights. In milder winter climates (like many parts of South Africa), they are generally happy in the open garden.
When will my ranunculus flower?
If you plant in the recommended autumn–early winter window, you can expect blooms from late winter into spring. Exact timing depends on your climate and planting date, but as a guide, ranunculus usually flower about 90–120 days after planting.
When will my ranunculus corm pre-order be shipped?
Ranunculus corms are a seasonal product. Pre-orders are shipped at the correct planting time for South Africa, usually from March onwards. We pack and send orders in batches, and you’ll receive tracking details as soon as your parcel is on its way.
